REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SLEMAN - In Javanese culture, Nyadran is a traditional ceremony to welcome the Islamic fasting month, Ramadhan which will start next week. It is more unique because Nyadran was inherited from Buddhist-Hinduism culture. 

said Nyadran tradition had been conducted from last year.

"This tradition has been packed to be more attractive and in line to our religion. The activities included Islamic entertainment and arts and also presented by Islamic teachers," Chairman of the Committee, Priyo Utomo. said on Friday.

The word Nyadran comes from the word Sraddha, Nyraddha, Nyraddhan. Javanese language and culture's expert PJ Zoetmulder in his book, Kalangwan, said the Sraddha ceremony followed to the Buddhist-Hindu of Majapahit Kingdom in 1350. It was held to commemorate the death of Queen Tribhuwana Tungga Dewi. Surprisingly, the transition from the Buddhist-Hindu of Majapahit to Muslim of Majapahit did not cause this tradition vanished.

Utomo said Nyadran tradition contained cultural values and togetherness to enchance religious harmony. This tradition was not only only involved Muslim people, but also non-Muslims.
