REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SITUBONDO - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that military drill was not necessary a preparation for war, but rather for safeguarding and protecting the sovereignty and territory of Republic of Indonesia.

"The strength of reliable defense means strong defense posture with modern weapons systems and strategies, combined with appropriate policies and doctrines to meet the demands in modern war era," Yudhoyono said after witnessing joint military exercises at marine combat training center in Situbondo, East Java, on Friday.

Yudhoyono said that war was complicated by harsh and bloody battle. Indonesian soldiers must exercise well but the military drill is not necessary a preparation for war. The exercise, he said, was necessary to safeguard the sovereignty and integrity of this country.

"Indonesia doesn't have any intention of aggression to other countries. We just want to protect our territorial integrity. Indonesia loves peace, but our sovereignty and integrity are set in stone," Yudhoyono said.
