Pangestu: Ready to chair WTO

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, is optimistic that she will be chosen as Director General of World Trade Organization (WTO) replacing Pascal Lamy whose office term ends in August 31.

"We (Indonesia) get some recognition," Pangestu said, mentioning that several countries supported her. Considering its capacity and capability, Indonesia is able to lead WTO. Pangestu is approaching other countries to explain Indonesian vision, which is aimed to strengthen global trade system. 

WTO, with the membership more than 157 countries, represents various interests on trade.

She admitted that not all members of WTO had officially supported Indonesia, but ASEAN countries had expressed their commitment. Pangestu has visited developed countries, such US and Belgium looking for supports. 

"I will visit Africa, Latin America and Caribbean," she said.

Beside Mari Elka Pangestu, other candidates nominated for the post of Director General are Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen from Ghana, Anabel Gonzalez from Costa Rica, Tim Groser from New Zealand, Amina C Mohamed from Kenya, Ahmad Thougan Hindawi from Jordan, Herminio Blanco from Mexico, Taeho Bark from Republic of Korea and Roberto Carvalho de Azevedo from Brazil.
