REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Minister of Defense, Purnomo Yusgiantoro said that the ministry would speed up weapons procurement in 2013 by implementing road map of bureaucratic reform. He admitted that weapon systems of Indonesian armed forces failed to reach essential minimum forces (MEF) 2012.
The main equipment and weapon systems of Indonesian armed forces reached 26 percent from essential minimum forces (MEF) 2012. Based on the strategic plan of the Ministry of Defence, MEF of Indonesia's main equipment and weapon systems must reach 28.7 percent.
"The target for 2013 is to achieve the remaining 2.87 percent," Yusgiantoro said on Wednesday.
Yusgiatoro said that the ministry failed to achieve the 2.87 percent in 2012 due to several reasons. The first, government did not provide sufficient budget for MEF. Secondly, the process of procurement was through long bureaucracy.
Chief of Indonesian Armed Forces, Agus Suhartono, confirmed that Armed Forces would purchase new weaponry. Also, to strengthen the power of Indonesian Armed Forces, he plans to build 25 land defense posts and five posts in border line islands.
