REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA - Indonesia, having the third biggest tropical forest in the world, was potential to implement green economy in every development sector, Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan, said.

"The implementation of green economy should yield a wider space for economic activity without sacrificing conservation," Hasan said on Monday.

Ministry of Forestry has issued green economy for sustainable development. It prioritizes the acceleration of plantation and national park building. Hasan said the creation of plantation was the right solution as Indonesia had suitable climate for wide ranges of plants and trees.

The plantation is expected to absorb emission of green house effects and increase the soil carbon. It can also prevent the threat of non-tariff barrier and fulfil basic material for primary timber industry.

The development of plantation will be in line with development of timber industry, expecting to open job opportunity and generate foreign exchange.

Meanwhile, national park will be synergized with conservation, life buffer and sustainable development. "With such potency, I am optimistic that green economy can be implemented in Indonesia," Hasan said.
