REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia fully supports an upgrade for Palestinian to non-member status in the United Nations (UN). Indonesian Government would become the sponsor of the effort, Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa, said.

Natalegawa said that the discussion would be conducted on Thursday in New York. "We will become the co-sponsor of this resolution. We will deliver our statement of support and concern abroad," he said on Wednesday.

He said that the support was important. The world concerned the condition in Middle East during the Arab Spring. However, they seem to ignore the never ending problem, Palestine and Israel.

About 132-member UN General Assembly have recognized Palestine as a state. The upgrade status in UN from observer to non-member means recognizing Palestine as a state. Palestine will also have an access to sign up to the International Criminal Court (ICC), allowing Palestine to take action against Israel.

Natalegawa said that it would be tough discussion as several countries worried that Palestine would join ICC. Natalegawa said that the decision should be taken through consensus instead of voting. However, the dispute between Palestine and Israel is the resistor.
