Ulama: No clemency for drug related criminals

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Clemency for drug related criminals was considered inappropriate, as the step hurt the effort to protect you generation, ulamas said. Clemency should not have awarded to any drug related criminals including the maker, dealers, or users, one of chairmans of Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) Ma'ruf Amin during the meeting of Indonesian Board of Ulama (MUI) in Tasikmalaya of West Java.

“In some cases, death sentence might be necessary,” he said. 

Amin cited the holy book chapter 7 verses 56, “And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good." 

The Chairman of Tarjih and Tajdid Council of Muhammadiyah, Syamsul Anwar, emphasized that proper punishment towards drug dealers were needed considering their actions could affect whole generation. “Death sentence is inevitable in some cases.”

Yet, he also admitted that giving clemency was prerogative right of the president while Islam also admitted that government had a mandate to govern. “But it does not mean the president can grant clemency to any convicted person,” he said.
