REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian export of rattan products is expected to reach 230 million USD on 2013 for US and European market only. On the second semester, the performance of rattan furniture export to US and Europe sits on number six after China and Vietnam, Director of Forestry and Plantation Industries at the Ministry of Industry Aryan Warga said on Friday.

However, the lack of raw materials makes the utility of rattan producer reaches 20 percent or equal to export worth 100 million USD per year. "We have big local capacity of production so the industry could have at least export 400 million to 500 million USD per year," the Chairman of Indonesian Rattan Furniture and Handicraft Association (AMKRI), Soenoto, said on Friday.

The industry will gradually boost export rattan furniture up to 400 million to 500 million USD for five years. "As an initial stage, local manufacture will maintain local capacity and increase domestic utility. For five years, the performance of rattan industry is expected to be stable," he said.

In recent years, Indonesia was the biggest exporter of raw rattan in the world. According to Statistics Board (BPS), rattan export from 10 provinces in Indonesia hits 32,844.98 tonnes or 32.219 million USD.
