Food security tops at APEC Ministerial Meeting

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Preceding the meeting of APEC's leaders, Ministers of APEC held ministerial meeting on September 5-6 in Vladivostok, Russia, with 'Integrate to Grow, Innovate to Prosper' as its theme. The ministers discussed the concrete steps to boost development amid global economic crisis. The members specifically talked on the challenges related to food security and emergency preparedness.

Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa said in press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the increasing price of food was a warning of previous food crisis can occur as happened in 2007-2008. Even The United Nations warned on Tuesday of a possible repeat of the 2007-2008 food crisis. Marty emphasized that APEC and other international organizations must pay attention to staple price and food security.

He also said that private party played an important role on preventing fluctuating price and supporting food security. He encouraged the cooperation of public and private in APEC.

Talking on emergency preparedness, Marty said every country must improve their preparedness towards disaster and enhance its capacity to boost recovery, reconstruction, and rehabilitation in the region inflicted by disasters. Efforts on recovery can help the region to recover its economy.
