REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - A delegation of Australian Member of Parliament (MP) visit Padang of West Sumatera to see Australian Government-funded reconstruction efforts following 2009 earthquake. They also view several aid programs in the region.
According to the press release from Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Australia committed around 19 million AUD to support emergency relief, recovery, and reconstruction efforts in West Sumatera. The delegation will visit Kajai 04 Elementary School in Pariaman, in which the reconstruction is jointly funded by Australia and US, and a health care center, Puskesmas Pauh Kambar, reconstructed by Australian Government funding.
Houses are re-built to earthquake safe specifications through Australia's Resilient Villages: Safe Earthquake Housing Project. The parliamentarians will meet the local builders who have been trained on construction methods.
Australia also provides clean water and sanitation program in Padang area. The delegation will meet families who have had drinking from water connections placed in their homes in the nearby village of Bungo Paso.
Considering the visit as parliamentary study tour to Indonesia, the delegation will also meet the Governor of West Sumatera, Irwan Prayitno, and the Head of Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Syamsul Maarif. The delegation is Alan Griffin, Richard Colbeck, Ursula Stephens and Rowan Ramsey.
