REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia and Australia strengthen its cooperation to minimize the impacts of illegal immigrants crossing to Australia through Indonesian waters.
"The accident often happens in the middle of the sea and threatens their life," Indonesian Minister of Defense, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, said after welcoming the visiting Australian Minister of Defense Stephen Francis Smith at the Ministry of Defense Office on Tuesday.
Problem appears when the location of the accident is in Indonesia, but the signal of accident is firstly received by Australia, or vice versa. To tackle such problem, Indonesia and Australia form joint ethic code involving Indonesian Marine and Navy.
"National Search and Rescue (Basarnas) and Kohanudnas will also involve, while Australia is managed by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)," Purnomo said.
Bilateral meeting will be held until today in Jakarta. Australia sends its ministers, Minister of Defense Stephen Francis Smith, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Anthony Albanese, and Minister of Defense Material, Home Affairs and Justice Jason Dean Clare.
