Mentawai Islands back to business

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG - Mentawai Islands, once struck by tsunami in 25 October 2010, are now back to business. The surfers can once more enjoy the surfing spots with best waves in Mentawai.

Many parties worried the tsunami and earthquake affected the tourism industry in Mentawai badly, the Head of Tourism Department in Mentawai Desti Seminora said. The 5.2 scale richter earthquake followed by tsunami, killed 447 people and damaged infrastructure and housings, hit Mentawai Islands which situated approximately 100 miles west of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. Even one of the world-best surfing spots and Resort Macaroni in Sikabu Beach, Mentawai, was damaged.

Fortunately, the situation back to normal in a matter of months. Surfers from around the world have come back to enjoy the world-best surfing spots. The data in tourism department records at least 4,000 surfers come to Mentawai in the aftermath of tsunami. 

The foreign investors also still plant their money in the island and re-open their business. The number of investors is now increasing from five to 15. Mentawai Islands have 40 surfing spots categorized as the best in the world and recognized by the world surfers.
