REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Indonesia suffers 30 trillion IDR of loss for a decade because of illegal fishing and fish theft, according to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The Head of the Center of Analysis for International and Institutional Cooperation of Secretary General of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Anang Noegroho, cited that on Tuesday in ASEAN Sectoral Working Group on Fisheries (ASWGFi).

“It is financially and economically significant,” he said.

The price of a kilogram of fish, he said, was two USD. It means that the stolen fish could reach 166 tonnes per year. But, he sees the declining of fish theft cases from year to year as every country concerns over the problem.

The illegal fishing also can be caused by the negligence of fisherman. Some fishermen might not understand about the borders or they might get lost. The illegal fishing could be tackled by three mechanisms, he said, which were data exchange, harmonization of the regulation, and the improvement of fishery management in each country. Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Gellwynn Jusuf, said the efforts taken by the ministry had saved the potency of state loss in the amount of 912 billion IDR in a year.
