REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, Raden Saleh, an Indonesian master artist, is very well known in Indonesia and Europe. During his lifetime, his works have never been exhibited until today, 200 years after he died.

Held by Goethe Institute, Indonesian National Gallery, and German Embassy to Indonesia, the exhibition will presents 40 Raden Saleh's works. This exhibition, named Raden Saleh and the beginning of Indonesian modern painting, will be held from June 3-17 in National Gallery.

One of the maestro’s famous paintings is the picture of Prince of Diponegoro arrest by Dutch troops in March 28, 1830. Painted on 1857, the painting was a gift for the King of Netherland, William III.

As the first Indonesian artist studying in Europe, Raden Saleh brought new concept on visual art to Indonesia. But his masterpiece are still rooted strongly to Javanese art.

The exhibition tries to show that Raden Saleh is the first Indonesian artist who combines European and Javanese cultures. More than 40 oil paintings and sketches will be presented for visitors. It also integrates the reproduction of his works, especially his paintings in Europe as they cannot be brought to Indonesia.
