REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KENDAL - Nahdlatul Ulama hopes the character of Indonesian clerics can bridge social problem with gentle doctrine. The nation cultural values should also be put forward to create Indonesia as pillar of Islam civilization. "The one that will last is Islam which is integral with local culture and developed knowledge," the Chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama, Said Aqil Sirodj, said on Sunday.

He believes Muslim can be a pioneer of development if they study the function of ahlussunah wal jamaah (aswaja). Aswaja is identical with theory of Islam interconnected with Indonesian culture. Thus, the theory and development spread fast.

NU is also one of the pioneer of Indonesia. The image of aswaja formed since 1926 by NU become the color of Indonesian muslim life. "Arab oriented Islam will not last in Indonesia," he explained. Unfortunately, the quantity and theory sometime hamper the realization of their hope. The power of NU who has 40 percent people in 270 million of Indonesian population seems small proportion because they have not been integrated into one community.
