Vice President: Politic challenges Indonesian media

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA – World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) holds an international conference in Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Publish Asia 2012 ‘Shaping the future of new publishing’. The event is attended by about 600 participants from Asia Pacific. 

“Printing business in Indonesia faces a wide range of challenges, and related to Indonesian political situation which is in the transition process of democracy,” Vice President Boediono, said in his opening speech on Wednesday.  

To answer the challenges, he urged the media to work harder in processing information. 

Boediono also praised the event, especially because it was held in Bali. He considered it as a broad recognition to the growth of Indonesian media and democracy. This is the first time the event is held in Indonesia. Last year, Bangkok hosted this event. This annual conference is carried out from April 10-12.

 

Media and democracy contributes to Indonesian economic growth. Media on the recent years gives job opportunity to the job seekers. He also urged the media to innovate. The latest challenge for printed media is social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and online.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Communication and Informatics, Tifatul Sembiring, who also attends the event said Indonesia sat in number one in Asia for media openness.

“In democracy and media openness, Indonesian press it on the first rank in Asia. Even in US and Australia, reporting in the media is still limited in certain ways,” he said.
