REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG - Economist from Andalas University, Prof Syafruddin Karimi, said political elites do not encourage energy and water saving act. "It seems that they do not realize the potency of energy and water crisis. They only think to adjust fuel price when external threat from world oil price increasing happen," Karimi said on Friday.

His opinion is related to Presidential Instruction number 2/2008 on energy and water saving in governmental institution. Government has formed National Team on Energy and Water Saving which is obliged to form a task force to evaluate the implementation of the presidential instruction.

At the same time, he said, elite politics only thought on the redistribution to the poor. "It time for them to think about the future by responding the national potential threat," he said.

The commitment for energy and water savings is a must. The commitment to save subsidy should be also in accordance with the commitment to protect state property from the corruptors. "If those are in well balance, the potency of unstable economy and politic will be easily eliminated," he said.

He added, it was possible to separate economy from politic. Energy and water savings were right in calculation, he said, but not politically right.
