REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON – Indonesian movie ‘Khalifah’ directed by Nurman Hakim wins ‘Prix du Publique’ in Festival International des Cinemas d’Asie (FICA) 2012 in Vesoul, France. Prix du Publique is awarded as Khalifah becomes a viewers’ choice favorite in the festival.

The premiere was attended by 300 viewers from France and foreign film critics and also the Festival Director Jean-Mare Therouanne. About 90 films join FICA, an annual film festival focusing on the Asia’s cinemas, this year started from February 14 to 21. The films are divided into two categories, contemporary and documenter film.

Khalifah has generally attracted the FICA 2012 guests. The big attention from the crowds also shows their curiosity about Islam.

The participation of Indonesian movies in FICA is a part of Indonesian culture diplomacy, the Minister Counselor of Education and Cultural Indonesian Ambassador in Paris, Arifi Saiman, said on Friday. “It is an important momentum for creating understanding about values of a nation, particularly Indonesian values, through film,” he said.

Starred by Indra Herlambang, the film plays a story of a woman named Khalifah who marries to a mysterious man named Muhammad Rasyid. The husband then asks her to wear burqa. Life seems never be the same for Khalifah after the marriage.

Khalifah, Saiman said, got positive response from the spectators. It is seen from the spectators’ enthusiasm in interactive dialogue, held after the premier, with the actor Indra Herlambang about his character in the movie.
