REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN – The government will immediately issue import regulation in agriculture and horticulture to protect the local commodities. Several protected commodities are corn, potato, and shallot.

“The farmers of corn and shallot in North Sumatera complain because the price is dropped as a result of abundant import products. We must prevent that so the government will issue import regulation in horticulture,” the member of Local Representatives Council (DPD) from North Sumatera, Parlindungan Purba, said on Wednesday.

Purba admitted that he recently met Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Dedi Saleh, who stated about the government’s plan to issue the import regulation in agriculture and horticulture commodities next March. Purba also discussed on corn import with Ministry of Trade.

“I questioned about whether the government issued the permit or why the government could not stop the import during our harvest time. But the Ministry of Trade argued that there was no regulation on corn import so there was no limits to import that commodity,” Purba cited. So far, the regulations on import are only are applied on certain commodities, such as rice and salt. Then new regulation in March will be a much awaited regulation on import.
