JAKARTA – To some, small amount of money for our pocket may change their fate. And this is a story how your compassion means a lot to some orphans.

It is Baitul Maal Muamalat (BMM) that manages such charity and distribute it to the poor. The Department Manager of Communication Planning and Standard Organization of BMM, Hasis Purwanto, said, BMM had various programs for orphans, such as Orphan Kafala. The program includes life assurance through the fulfillment of necessity, education by giving scholarship, and health insurance.

The program is mainly to help the victims of Tsunami in Aceh. “There are 3,025 orphans involved in this program,” Purwanto said. He saiy, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) also provides some fund to the program.

Orphan Kafala developed in 2006. The children involved get five US dollar each day. All of the children are still studying at elementary school. “We also give some skills like making veil to form their self-reliant spirit,” he said.

He explained, Islamic Solidarity School (ISS) located in Janto, Aceh, is another program on giving aid to the orphans, especially for those studying at middle school. Using dormitory system, the school accommodates 350 children. For Purwanto, ISS is a form of Muslim solidarity for orphans.

For those in high school, BMM has Madinah Al-Munawaroh School (MMS), which is also in Aceh. Developed since six months ago, MMS is vocational school major in graphic. The orphans studied in MMS are 300-400 teenagers.

Empowering the orphans also is the main target of Mizan Amanah. The Fundraising Manager of Mizan Amanah, Dede Sutisna, said the empowerment program for orphans is in the form of Non-dormitory Care Compensation for Orphan (Sata). Until now, it serves 3.500 orphans. He admits, the number is still below the target, which should be 12.000 children to receive the fund of 1.2 billion IDR.

Mizan Amanah also has scholarship fund for the orphan’s performance (The Best). It is for the students in second grade of middle school to those in university. Other programs are Superior Children (Aku) and Independent Foster Brother (Kami). Aku is for the orphans below 12. The aid is 500.000 IDR each kids per month. Kami stands for children above 12 year old. Each month, every child gets 750.000 IDR.
