Indonesia-Aussie to organize "meet and greet" in Kupang

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- Indonesian and Australian government will organize a "Meet and Greet Local Economic Stars" in Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) or East Nusa Tenggara, January 24-26. The two work under a cooperation program, Australian Community Development and Civil Society Strengthening Scheme (ACCESS).

Around 130 representatives from the region and cities in NTT will attend the event. The participants are provincial administration, academicians, non-governmental organizations, and the media. 

"The theme of this event is `Initiative, action and contribution of Women to Support Local Economy and Village Self-reliance`," Steering Committee Coordinator of ACCESS, Widya P Setyanto, said when contacted by phone from Denpasar on Sunday.

Setyanto said that the event will focus on actualization and appreciation the collaborative and dynamic work`s system of individuals and communities in NTT to build the local economy and village self-reliance. "We hope the event will provide documentation of practical local economy development to support village self-reliance," he said.

The participants are able to present their recommendation for decision makers at all levels. The area of topics includes local economy development acceleration, family economic improvement, and village self-reliance. Then they must follow up their plan to develop local economy in their villages or regions.

"We also hope this event will contribute to the country, observers (activists and academics) in female gender issues, poverty, and local economic development based on local assets. Those are the main agendas of this program," said Setyanto.

ACCESS program is in line with the program East Nusa Tenggara Governor, Frans Lebu Raya. He develops Independent Red Grape Village (DeMAM) program as a part of 2009-2013 Regional Mid-period Development Plan of East Nusa Tenggara Province. Hopefully, DeMAM implementation will eradicate poverty in the province. Today the poverty rate in NTT counts 21.23 percent of total population.
