REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- All national elements must back introducing halal standard, to achieve the standard at global stage, an Indonesian legislator said, recently. Dubbed as a country with the biggest Muslim population in the world, surprisingly the halal awareness Indonesia is still low.

"Halal awarness is still low, then we need an halal awareness movement," Surahman Hidayat said. He appreciated the efforts of Lembaga Pengkajian Pangan, Obat-obatan dan Kosmetika Majelis Ulama Indonesia (LPPOM MUI)  -the only body authorized to issue halal certificate in Indonesia-- and World Halal Food Council (WHFC) in introducing halal standard to the public, to incrase public awareness in halal standard.

Surahman added, the importance of halal standard was not only for religious but also health, economy, environmental, and social reasons. He cited the halal standard in Italia, driven not by religious but economy reason since there were not many Muslim in the country. He emphasized all elements in our society should be more active to increase the halal awarness.
