REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURAKARTA -- The Administration of Surakarta will open a Keris Museum in October 2016 as a new tourism attraction in the region.

Head of the Culture and Tourism Office of Surakarta Administration Eny Tyasni Suzana stated here on Monday that the authority was still working on a revision on the detailed engineering design of the museum that is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Moreover, the authority still needs to complete the story line and the dioramas to be exhibited in the museum that will take some three months.

"We hope it will be completed in September, so that the museum could be opened in October," Suzana noted.

The Keris or Kris is a distinctive, asymmetrical traditional dagger from Indonesia.

Serving as a weapon and spiritual object, krises are often considered to possess magical powers and have been used by kings and historical figures in the Javanese history.

The administration had set aside some Rp two billion to develop the Keris Museum, which is located on Bhayangkara Street of Surakarta, with the hopes of providing a new tourism destination and attracting more visitors to the city.

The district has been a cultural heritage center in Java, with tourists visiting the Keraton or Palace of Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat and Pura Mangkunegaran.

Other attractions such as its culinary and antique markets have also lured domestic and international tourists.

Last year, 4.2 million tourists visited Surakarta, Suzana stated, adding that the administration has set a target of luring 4.5 million visitors to the district.
