REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 has again rocked West Sumba district in East Nusa Tenggara province on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier, an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale jolted at 7:59 a.m. local time.

The epicenter of the quake was located at 10.65 degrees southern latitude and 118.97 degrees eastern longitude and at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the official website of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, it said.

Since the first quake, a number of aftershocks have hit the district. The strongest was a quake of magnitude 5.0, which hit at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Chief of the BMKG Center for Earthquakes and Tsunamis Rahmat Triyono stated that the series of quakes were categorized as shallow quakes caused by the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate.
