REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The police have arrested a new suspect of fake news on marked ballots with the initials MIK (38 y.o). The suspect was arrested at his residence in the Cilegon area, Banten, and apparently was a middle school teacher.
"From the results of examination, the suspect is known as a junior high school teacher in the Cilegon area," said Head of Public Relations of Jakarta Metro Police, Police Comissioner Argo Yuwono at press conference at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Friday (Jan 11).
According to Argo, MIK claimed to create sentences on his Twitter account @chiechilhie80 to notify the support teams of presidential candidate number 02 about the informations. However, the suspect unable to mentioned his source of information.
"He said he got from Facebook but he failed to show which Facebook account spread the false news first," Argo said.
When the information went viral, the suspect deleted his posts from his Twitter account, Argo explained.
The police from the Cyber Crime division of the Metro Jaya Police arrested MIK on January 6 at around 10:30 pm at his residence, at Purwakarta District, in Cilegon City, Banten Province. Before being arrested in Cilegon, the police had hunted down MIK in Majalengka, West Java.
The suspect was charged with Article 28 paragraph 2 jo 45a paragraph 2 of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning changes to the Republic of Indonesia's Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Transaction Information (ITE) with a maximum sentence of six years and a fine of Rp1 billion.
In addition, he is also subject to Articles 14 and 15 of the Republic of Indonesia's Law Number 1 of 2006 concerning the Distribution of Fake News. With a minimum imprisonment of 2 years at the latest 10 years.
