REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PONTIANAK -- The West Kalimantan Provincial Police uncovered 771 drug cases last year compared to 530 cases a year earlier. The drugs included hashish, ecstasy, and crystal meth.
"The increase in the number of uncovered drug cases was the result of police officers' active operations and people's participation (in uncovering drug cases)," Chief of the West Kalimantan Provincial Police Inspector General Didi Haryono noted here on Monday.
The drug cases were mostly related to crystal meth. Didi explained that almost every day, chiefs of district police have been reporting cases of drug abuses and motorcycle thefts.
"These two criminal offenses dominated crimes in West Kalimantan," he noted.
Didi remarked that he had ordered his men to take stern measures against drug traffickers, dealers, and lords, including shooting them on sight without killing them, in order to give a deterrent effect. The police also have kept the profile of criminals to facilitate the investigation of criminal cases including drug abuses, he revealed.
West Kalimantan is vulnerable to international drug syndicates as it shares common borders with the Malaysian state of Serawak. The four districts of Sambas, Sanggau, Bengkayang, Sintang, and Kabupaten Kapuas Hulu in West Kalimantan border Serawak.
