REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A 9-year-old disabled boy named Muklis Abdul Kholik, or Adul, expressed his desire to go to school and college during his discussion with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). During the discussion, Adul was accompanied by Social Minister Agus Gumiwang.

"I want to be able to go to school and college," Adul stated, during his discussion with Jokowi in the VVIP tent at Mall Summarecon Parking Lot, Bekasi, on Monday.

The boy also remarked his aspiration to become a firefighter.

"I want to help people," he noted, explaining the reason for wanting to become a firefighter, which the president welcomed with a smile and a proud nod.

Jokowi immediately responded to Adul's aspiration with a thumbs up. Adul is a disabled child who walks 3 kilometers every day to reach his school.

After the discussion, Adul was taken by the president to view a number of assistive equipment outlets for the differently abled. Some of the outlets visited include wheelchair outlets and hearing aid outlets.

A number of outlet coordinators from the Ohana Foundation as well as from hearing aid outlets explained the benefits of providing wheelchairs. In addition, a number of artworks were displayed, such as the eggshell artworks made using eggshells arranged to create images of the faces of major world figures, including Jokowi.

Several paintings made by differently abled students, including images of the face of the first Indonesian president Soekarno and former US president Barack Obama, were also displayed.

"This were made by the differently abled children at the Center for Social Rehabilitation of Bina Daksa Professor Doctor Suharso Surakarta," the Head of the Guidance Section, Advanced Center for Social Rehabilitation, Bina Daksa Professor Doctor Suharso Surakarta, Suyono Yusuf (53), explained.

He noted that the artwork was only one of the works made by the differently abled. Making eggshell artwork takes about 1 to 2 weeks and is usually done by a single person.

"The government's attention to disabled people is now getting better. Surely, the services for disabled people are certainly increasing, namely public facilities that are friendly to disabled people," Yusuf revealed.

He elaborated that the differently abled friends were willing to give the painting as a memento to Jokowi. In addition, a number of awards were also given to the achievers during the event.

A number of government assistance, in the form of hearing aids and wheelchairs, cash, and passport funds, were also provided.
