REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia, Peter MacArthur, met President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon. They to discuss several issues, including support for the Palestinians.
According to Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who accompanied Jokowi at the bilateral meeting, Canada has expressed its support for Palestine as well as United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for Africa (UN ROA).
"With reduced US assistance, UN ROA faces financial difficulties as it lacks assistance of US$300 million," she stated.
In addition to Palestine, Canada shares concern on several issues which Indonesia also focuses on, particularly the Rakhine State crisis. "We also spoke about Rakhine State issues, because Canada has special envoys there," Marsudi noted.
In October last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named Bob Rae as his special envoy to Myanmar, began his work immediately to engage in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis in Rakhine State. As a special envoy, Rae reinforced the urgent need to resolve the humanitarian and security crisis in Myanmar and addressed the situation affecting vulnerable populations, including the Rohingya Muslim community, other religious and ethnic minorities, and women and girls.
He has also advised the Canadian prime minister on how Canada can best support the efforts to respond to the needs of those affected and displaced by the recent violence, United News of Bangladesh reported.
