REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The volume of Jakarta's garbage transported to the Bantargebang integrated waste management (TPST) Area has increased by four percent to 7,999 tons per day during the fasting month of Ramadhan. Head of the Jakarta Environment Office Isnawa Adji stated that the volume of garbage sent to the landfill from January to May before Ramadhan had reached 7,710 tons per day.
"The increased volume was sparked by a change in the people's diet, which increases during breaking the fast and pre-dawn meals," Adji noted here on Wednesday.
Most of the trash comprised vegetable and fruit residue, plastic, and food packaging.
"However, despite the increase during Ramadhan, the volume of garbage will decline few days before and after Eid al-Fitr (D-6 to D+6), as people have returned to their hometowns and villages during the collective leave," Adji explained.
The volume of garbage will reach its peak from seven to 10 days after Eid al-Fitr and will then return to normal, he pointed out.
"In addition, garbage collectors have returned to their duties to collect and transport trash to the landfill," Adji added.
