REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) has suggested Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran travelers to use the "mudik" or homegoing application that will help them to avoid traffic jams. MTI said the flow of traffic this year would not be far different from that in the previous year, but smooth flow of traffic is expected to be maintained.

"They can utilize the mudik application to obtain information. Through this application, Lebaran travelers could, for instance, avoid traffic gridlocks by taking alternative routes," MTI Chairman for Land Transportation Mode DJoko Setijowarno noted in Jakarta on Thursday.

Apart from using the mudik application to get information, the flow of traffic this year is also expected to be smooth, as the government is also operating several toll roads in addition to state-owned firm Pertamina's service to provide twice the volume of fuel it had offered last year.

Hence, it is expected that last year's Brexit tragedy would not be repeated during this year's Lebaran homecoming exodus.

"With regard to toll roads, the police should guide the traffic in the upstream and downstream areas. When the traffic is too heavy and a gridlock occurs, vehicles should not be allowed entry at the gate. The same should also apply at the exit gates," he remarked.

Speaking in connection with the distribution of fuel by Pertamina, Setijowarno said the state-owned company's services will be beneficial. Pertamina has provided various services at toll roads that could help vehicles obtain fuel.

Among the services, Pertamina will deploy a fuel package using motorcycles to deliver the fuel to customers stuck in traffic jams at toll roads.

"The fuel package service for motorists is helpful. What is important is how to manage it, so that it would also not cause traffic accidents. Motor vehicle drivers should not use lanes at will. They can only use emergency routes at toll roads," he stated.

During this year's homecoming event, Pertamina is preparing various other services, in addition to operating other fuel service stations in Sumatra and Java. Pertamina is providing 13 units of Pertamax service, 60 Pertamax kiosks, 200 units of fuel package service for motorists, 105 fuel bags, and 16 units of Dispenser Car Service.
