Police foil attempt to smuggle crystal meth to Jakarta

The drug trafficking has reached an alarming level, police says.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Police in the Indonesian province of Riau have foiled an attempt to smuggle 41 kilograms of crystal meth and 44 thousand ecstasy pills, mostly to Jakarta. The drugs were seized in two different sites, Chief of the Riau Provincial Police Inspector General Nandang stated here on Thursday.

He believed that the drugs have been brought from the same country, namely Malaysia. "The drug trafficking has reached an alarming level," he added.

In the first raid on May 9, conducted at 293 kilometers of the East Trans Highway exactly in front of the Kemuning sub-district police station, police seized 29 kilograms of crystal meth from a resident, identified by his initials as SS. The 44-year old SS has been named a suspect in the case.

In addition, the police also seized 20 thousand green ecstasy pills bearing the Omega brand, and a minivan.

The crystal meth was believed to be smuggled to Jakarta by land.

In the second raid, the police seized 12 kilograms of crystal meth and 24 thousand red ecstasy pills bearing the logo S from two suspects, identified by their initials as HC and MM. The two suspects were arrested on May 14.
