REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The House of Representatives (DPR) is to seek a second opinion from bankers and academics on the nomination of Perry Warjiyo as the sole candidate for Bank Indonesia (BI) governorship before conducting a fit and proper test on him. The nomination of the sole candidate for BI governorship is likely to come under the spotlight at the parliament, Chairman of the House Commission XI, Melchias Markus Mekeng said here on Monday.

Whether or not the nomination will be accepted will depend on political dynamics in the House Commission XI, he stated. "Political ripple is normal," he added.

Member of the House Commission XI Hendrawan Supratikno noted that the DPR will soon invite the National Banks Association (Perbanas) and the State Banks Association (Himbara) to give their views on Warjiyo's capacity.

On Monday (March 5), the DPR officially processed a letter from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) nominating Warjiyo as a sole candidate for BI governor for the 2018-2023 term.

House Speaker Bambang Soesatyo explained that the nomination of Warjiyo will be discussed at a meeting of the DPR's Consultative Body on Tuesday (March 6).

The consultative body will later ask the House Commission XI to set the date for the fit and proper test.

DPR will officially ask Warjiyo to synergize the central bank's monetary policy and the government's fiscal policy if the parliament accepts his candidacy, he remarked.

"The mixture of BI's monetary policy (and the government's fiscal policy) must be able to stimulate economic growth and have a direct impact on the people's welfare," he added.

Jokowi nominated Warjiyo to replace Agus Martowardojo. Warjiyo is currently the BI deputy governor.
