IMF director joins Jokowi blusukan to Tanah Abang market

Jokowi asks advices from IMF director ways to empower MSMEs.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Managing Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde joined President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to an impromptu visit (blusukan) to Tanah Abang Market, Central Jakarta, on Monday. Jokowi asked Lagarde's advices to empower businessmen of a micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). 

"This morning I also have asked her how to face economic digitalization," Jokowi said during impromptu visit in Tanah Abang market.

Jokowi wanted Lagarde to have field experience on Indonesia economy. He explained Tanah Abang market has more than 19 thousand units of shops. "I believes this becomes a field experience for Mrs. Lagarde for IMF's economic design and policy," he said.

Lagarde bought some souvenirs during blusukan at Tanah Abang market. She smiled when Jokowi mentioned what was in her shopping bag. "She bought blue shirt, a cheongsam for his husband," Jokowi remarked.

Earlier, Jokowi welcomed Lagarde at State Palace. He was accompanied by Finance Minister Sri Mulayni, Bappenas head Bambang Brodjonegoro, BI Governor Agus Martowardjojo, and Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

Meanwhile, Lagarde was accompanied by IMF Asia Pacific Director Changyong Rhee, Communications Director Gerard Thomas Rice, IMF Secretary Jianhai Lin. Also, Senior Resident Representative for Indonesia John G Nelmes, and Head of the IMF Division for Indonesia Luis E Breuer.

In the meeting, Jokowi and Lagarde discussed a number of issues related to Indonesia preparation as host of IMF-World Bank annual meeting. The event has planned to be held in Nusa Dua, Bali in next October.
