Govt offers condolences to victims of Istanbul blast

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's government and people have extended their deepest condolences to the victims and families affected by the explosion, which occurred on January 12 at 10:20 a.m. local time in Sultanahmet, Hagia Sophia complex, Istanbul, Turkey.

The explosion led to 11 deaths, while 15 people were injured in the incident.

"Consulate General of Indonesia (KJRI) in Istanbul has not received any information on the Indonesians who became the victims of the incident," Foreign Ministry of Indonesia noted in a written statement received by Antara here on Wednesday.

Even as KJRI Istanbul continues to coordinate with the local authority to ascertain the identity of the victims, Indonesian citizens currently living in Turkey have been urged to avoid crowded areas, which might become the targets.

Indonesians planning to travel to Turkey are also expected to be heedful of the situation.

Currently, 708 Indonesians reside in Istanbul, most of which are students or individuals with steady jobs in Turkey.
