REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANJUNG BALAI -- The Teluknibung international seaport's customs and excise officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle a total of 15,557 grams of methamphetamine into Indonesia from Malaysia.

An Aceh resident identified by his initial as RH, 57, was arrested at the seaport's arrival terminal, on Saturday, for attempting to smuggle the illicit drugs, Yosef Ariansyah of the Tanjungbalai customs and excise office, said here, Sunday (8/9).

RH just exited from MV Pacific Jet Star ferry when he was arrested because the customs officers suspected the contents of two paint buckets that RH was carrying.

The officers checked the buckets and found crystal methamphetamine in the buckets.

RH claimed that he had been ordered by Ramli in Malaysia to take the drugs to Medan.

Deputy Head of the Tanjungbalai police office Commissioner Saragih said the police would make further investigation to find out a possible connection of RH with an international drug network.

In line with the existing laws, the suspect could face life imprisonment for attempting to smuggle in more than five grams of illicit drugs.
