President orders Trans-Sumatra toll construction to commence in April

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has given orders to commence construction work on the Trans-Sumatra toll road by late March or April at the latest, in a bid to boost connectivity among the Sumatran provinces.

"Three months ago, I said we need the Trans-Sumatra toll road. I ordered to start the construction soon. I mentioned the target as April for the construction to begin. This morning, we will discuss it," Jokowi stated here on Thursday.

President Jokowi led a limited cabinet meeting with some ministers and concerned officials to discuss the plan regarding the construction of the Trans-Sumatra toll road.

He noted that the toll road will connect cities/districts with provinces and facilitate inter-island connectivity.

The government invites the private sector to participate in the construction of the toll road.

"We do not know yet whether it will be built by state-owned companies (BUMN) or it will be assisted by the private sector," Jokowi remarked.

Among those attending the limited cabinet meeting were State Enterprises Minister (BUMN) Rini M. Soemarno, Agrarian Minister Ferry Mursyidan Baldan, Minister of National Development Planning/ Chairman of Bappenas (National Development Planning Agency) Andrinof Chaniago, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Banten Governor Rano Karno, and several related BUMN officials.
