Floods inundate two sub-districts in Langkat

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LANGKAT -- Floods submerged thousands of houses in two sub-districts in Langkat District, North Sumatra, following incessant heavy rains on Tuesday (13/1).

"Thousands of houses are submerged under floodwaters until now," Head of Tanjungpura Sub-district Surianyo said.

At least 1,100 houses were flooded in Pekubuan, West Pematang Cengal, Paya Perupuk, Pekan Tanjungpura, and Lalang villages, in Tanjungpura Sub-district.

Hectares of rice fields, rubber and oil palm plantations, had been inundated over the past three days. A school in Pekubuan was also flooded.

"The flooding has not subsided. It is even predicted that the water level will rise because of heavy rains," he said.

In Hinai Sub-district, some 684 houses were inundated at a height reaching up to 50 cm.

Of the flooded 684 houses, 454 are located in Cempa village, 107 in Batu Malenggang vilalge, and 23 in Tamaran village, Head of the Hinai Sub-district Fahri said.

Rice fields and oilpalm plantations, an elementary school, and a junior high school were affected by the flooding in Batu Malenggang village, while two elementary school buildings in Cempa village were also inundated.

"School activities have been halted because of the flooding," Fahri noted.
