REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Indonesia has its first electric bus made by Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS), which was also made electric car. Rector of ITS Triyogi Yuwono said the electric bus would be used as campus operational transportation.
"We will try it on November 30. It will be fully operated on January 2015," Yuwono said on Sunday, November 23.
The bus can save operational cost up to 40 percent, compared to conventional bus. It needs at least 10 hours to recharge.
The bus's battery can last up to 160 kilometer. ITS plans to build a solar panel recharge station that generates power up to 40 kWh per hour next year.
ITS made the most components of the bus, but the battery and the main engine are imported from China. "We are optimistic that we can produce our own components in the next three years," he said.
Mayor of Surabaya Tri Rismaharini appreciated the bus as it supported the vision of Surabaya as an environmental friendly city. "We can be eco-city. Thanks to ITS," she said.
