REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Child sexual abuse cases in Indonesia increased to 326 cases in 2014 compared to 200 cases in 2013. According to Chairman of the National Commission for Child Protection, Arist Merdeka Sirait, majority of victims are girls. In 2010, child sexual abuse cases in Indonesia was recorded 42 percent of total violences against children. The number also increases every year.

"Indonesia is in emergency condition of sexual crimes. The number was scary," Sirait said recently.

According to Sirait, government must put more attention to this issue. Children's predators have spread in various levels, including schools and social environment.

"Do not just blame the child, but whether environment contributes to child abuse or not," he added.

Member of the House of Representatives in Commission VIII, Hidayat Nur Wahid said that government's authority was needed to overcome this problem. The House plans to revise the Child Protection Law. One of articles that will be improved is giving more punishment to the perpetrators of crimes against children.

"We can propose the death penalty for the offenders who cause children to lose their lives or suffer psychological trauma," Wahid said.

Politician of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) also urged local government to make local regulation on childrens' play land restriction that could bring them into criminal acts, such as Play Station rental games.
