REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said that the idea of allowing two-wheeled vehicles to enter the toll roads was not urgent to be realized at this time. He said that the government will be careful in responding to the insistence on allowing motorbike to access the toll roads.
Budi reminded that the risk factor for motorcycle accidents is higher than four-wheeled vehicles. Currently, 70 percent of road accidents involving motorbikes, he revealed.
"First, we should consider the regulation, and I have not learned about it yet. Second, we should learn the international best practice. However, there's a risk for motorbikes safety," the minister explained in the Presidential Palace Complex, on Tuesday (Jan 29).
Other considerations that made the government reluctant to think about this policy were the abundance of vehicles in Indonesia. The number was not comparable to the length of the toll road built by the government.
However, Budi promised to follow up on the input regarding the idea. He will conduct a study of existing regulations regarding toll roads and their application in other countries.
"In my opinion it is not urgent. We also have to weigh the advantages and the disadvantages itself," he said.
Previously, Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono said, the idea of allowing motorbikes to enter the toll road originated from requests from workers in the Kertajati area, West Java, who live in Bandung. They hoped that they could be allowed to cross the toll road with two-wheeled vehicles.
