REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Senior investigator of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and victim of a violent acid attack case, Novel Baswedan stated, the formation of a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) by the National Police was not in accordance with his request. He assessed that the formation of TGPF was no different from the previous team.
"The investigators only receive a new assignment letter, but the problem actually is not about it," Novel said at KPK building, in Kuningan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Novel reminded that he and a coalition of civil society requested the formation of a joint fact-finding team (TGPF) as there were evidences and the facts that showed the investigation process did not really work to uncover the case. Thus, what was asked to be formed was a joint fact-finding team, not a team of investigators.
"This is what we have been asking about, what is the difference between this team and the previous one? We will judge whether this team works correctly or not, the indicator is whether the case will be properly revealed or not," he said.
Novel also worried about the impression that the burden to prove the case was on him. He questioned, why did investigations into criminal cases were charged to victims.
"Why did the investigators work on the motive first in revealing case of terror which is suspected to have an intellectual actor behind it? I'm an investigator and I understand the matter," he said.
He also requested that the formation of the joint team not only to meet the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission. He hoped that President Joko Widodo would pay attention and would not let the matter passed.
"On several occasions there were apparatus, government officials who said as if the attack on KPK employees was an ordinary case. It's sad. Even our government officials don't understand that people who are fighting to eradicate corruption are human rights fighters," he said.
He emphasized several recommendations submitted by the National Human Rights Commission. First, attacks on him was systematic and organized. Secondly, there was abuse of process in the process of disclosing the attack case in the dawn time on April 11, 2017.
"Whether this team will follow up on that, I don't think it is possible because the investigator is included in this (joint) team," he said.
Even so, he would be willing to be questioned by the Joint Police Team. But he asked for conditions, namely the team committed to uncover all the attacks experienced by KPK employees.
According to him, there were two possibilities if he gave a statement. It will be handled seriously, or it will only be used to erase the traces more perfectly.
Therefore, Novel said it was very natural for him to ask for serious disclosures of attacks that experienced by other KPK employees.
"I once conveyed some evidence of the acid attack case, whether due to intentional or negligent, it was missing. Some CCTVs that should have been there, were not found. There was no fingerprint evidence. The alleged perpetrator's cellphone was not taken, not secured, and not examined, and so did other evidences available at the National Human Rights Commission," he explained.
The National Police Headquarters finally approved the formation of a joint team to investigate the case of an acid attack on KPK's investigator Novel Baswedan. The formation of the joint team was marked by a letter signed by National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian with the number Sgas / 3 / I / HUK.6.6 / 2019 dated January 8, 2019.
