REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Commerce is targeting to revitalize 1,037 public markets in 2019. It will also exceed the revitalization target of five thousand public markets by the end of 2019.

"The revitalized market is mostly people's markets spread throughout the regions of Indonesia. Each region has one or two units of market," Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said in Jakarta on Thursday.

The minister stated that 2019 was the last year to achieve the development target of five thousand people's markets. Based on data from the Ministry of Commerce, the people's market revitalization program started in 2015.

That year, under the leadership of the Minister of Trade, Rachmat Gobel, a total of 1,023 markets were revitalized. The leadership of the Ministry of Commerce changed in 2016, but the revitalization program continued.

In 2016, the revitalized market units recorded under Thomas Lembong were 784 units. In mid-2016, the leadership was given to Lukita. The Minister of Trade, whose leadership lasted until the end of 2018, revitalized 812 markets in 2017.

Then, the program continued to reach a target of 1,562 people's markets spread across various regions of Indonesia until 2018. The total funding reached Rp3.13 trillion. The funds were divided into Rp1.53 trillion in Special Allocation Funds (DAK) and Rp1.6 trillion in Co-Administration Funds (TP) funds.

If the target is realized, 819 units would be completed in 2019.
