REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- The Indonesian police in Bengkalis District, Riau Province, have named two people as suspects in connection with the smuggling of a dozen migrant workers to Malaysia. They both known as Hamid alias Boboi (31) and Jamal (38).
The two suspects were accused by the police of being responsible for the death of 11 Indonesian migrant workers, whose bodies were recently found floating in the sea, Riau Provincial Police Spokesman Sen. Coms. Sunarto said here on Thursday. The arrest of Boboi and Jamal has enabled the police investigators to confirm that the bodies belonged to the Indonesian migrant workers who attempted to return home after working in Malaysia, he noted.
The ill-fated migrant workers' bodies were discovered in the waters of Bengkalis District, Dumai, and Meranti coastal areas between Nov 22 and Dec 4, after their boat capsized, he stated, adding that 4 of the 11 bodies have been identified.
They were identified as Mimi Dewi (32), Ujang Chaniago (48), Marian Suhadi (24), and Paisal Ardianto (24). They were residents of West Sumatra and North Sumatra Provinces.
The two suspects are likely to face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty by the Bengkalis District Court.
