REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono reminded contractors in various regions to adhere to work safety procedures while working on infrastructure development projects. He called on the consultants and contractors to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of safety and health, as well as the discipline of execution of time.

The Minister of Public Works and Housing affirmed that the consultants and executing contractors should not reduce attention, let alone underestimating matters that could pose an accident risk. Hadimuljono said in a written statement here on Monday, it was very important so that infrastructure development projects in the archipelago can realize zero accidents.

Previously, Director General of Construction Development of the Ministry of PUPR, Syarif Burhanuddin, explained in Jakarta on Thursday (Sept 6) that there should no longer be construction accidents in infrastructure development. For that, he said that various parties, ranging from planners, executors, supervisors to construction management, must take the responsibility to ensure that work accidents will no longer occur.

"Double check must always be done in the engineering world. One person can be wrong, but the accident could be prevented if someone checks again. In addition, experts must be involved to evaluate and see the loopholes or weaknesses to be corrected," Burhanuddin remarked.

Based on data from the Ministry of PUPR, in the last two years, there have been around 14 work accidents in infrastructure projects. There are at least five big points that cause work accidents.

The first is human error; the second is disruption of building materials; and the third is the number of equipment that is not certified. The fourth point is the method of implementing construction in the field, especially related to work safety and health programs, as well as budget efficiency.

"The acceleration of infrastructure development to improve the welfare of the community must be accompanied by the readiness of materials, construction workforce, and construction of heavy equipment," he explained.
