Soputan volcano eruption still a threat in Minahasa Tenggara

Mount Soputan has shown new activities over the past week spewing volcanic materials.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MINAHASA TENGGARA -- The District administration of Minahasa Tenggara District, North Sulawsi Province, warned the people to remain on the alert against further eruptions of Mount Soputan. The 1,784 meter high volcano has shown new activities over the past week spewing volcanic materials.

Mount Soputan sent thick smoke to the sky when the a powerful earthquake and tsunami left a scene of disaster in neighboring province of Central Sulawesi.

"We still keep the monitoring command on alert," head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Minahasa Tenggara, Ferry Uway said in Ratahan, on Monday.

The command post keeps coordination with the district administration, military, police and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Ferry said.

"This is the joint command post between institutions in handling the impact of possible eruptions of Mount Soputan," he said, adding the command post will continue to be active until the volcano ceases to be a threat.

Meanwhile, the people are not allowed to come closer than a 4 kilometers from the volcano, he said, adding the volcano is closed to mountain climbing.
