REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy House Speaker Fadli Zon has lauded a decision of the General Election Commission (KPU) to extend a duration of correcting the official election voter list (DPT) until two months or 60 days. DPT is crucial for presidential and legislative elections next year, he said.
Fadli said the 2019 elections should not be marred by DPT issues. DPT could be an entry point for a fraud in elections, and the quality of democracy is measured with DPT, he said.
"The decision of KPU is appropriate, and next there should be clarity whether proven duplicate voter names will be deleted or what, we see it is not clear yet," Fadli of the Gerindra Party said at Parliament Building here, Monday.
He also urged for a forensic audit of the KPU's information technology (IT). The results of the IT forensic audit should be made accessible to respective teams of presidential candidates, namely incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and his rival, Prabowo Subianto, he suggested.
KPU should recruit cyber security experts from various universities in Indonesia to prevent KPU's cyber system from being hacked or penetrated by outsiders, he added.
KPU Chairman Arief Budiman on Sunday announced a decision to extend the period of DPT correction until December 2018, or 60 days. All political parties and the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) have supported the decision.
Budiman said the extension is needed because KPU does not only trace duplicate voter names but also update other matters such as voters' address changes and eligible voters, who passed away. The updating and correction is carried out with the cooperation of political parties and Bawaslu, and both at the center and local levels, according to Budiman.
Indonesia will organize presidential and legislative elections on April 17, 2019.
