REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The national flag-carrier, Garuda Indonesia, has opened two new routes connecting Java and Sumatra, The new routes are namely the Palembang-Lampung-Bandung route and the Palembang-Padang route, to improve its domestic flight network and market potential.
The routes would be served by its ATR 72-600 aircraft, with a capacity of 70 seats.
"The opening of the direct flights has been a part of Garuda Indonesia's moves to increase national tourism potential in accordance with the airlines' commitment to expand the domestic market share," Garuda Indonesia President Director Pahala N Mansury said in a statement here on Friday.
According to Pahala, the Java-Sumatra routes have been seen as a promising market in the country. The opening of the two connected routes would accommodate public needs on comfortable point-to-point flight access.
The Palembang-Lampung-Bandung flight would be directly connected to the Palembang-Padang route, he elaborated. "We hope that the new flight routes could accommodate passenger traffic in the four cities, which are known for their tourism potential and education in Indonesia," he said.
Currently, Garuda Indonesia through its hub in Sumatra has operated at least 500 flights per week, directly connected to various regional flights in Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.
