Bawaslu says #2019GantiPresiden event not campaign violation

#2019GantiPresiden declaration was banned in Surabaya and Pekanbaru.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) commissioner Fritz Edward Siregar the movement of #2019GantiPresiden was not a form of campaign. Therefore, it did not violate any campaign regulation.

"Bawaslu states that until now the #2019GantiPresiden movement does not violate Law Number 7 Year 2017 (on Election)," said Fritz at Jakarta Metro Police headquarters on Tuesday.

Fritz called on the people to hold a peaceful campaign when the time has come. He expected supporters of the two pair candidates in presidential election 2019 to prevent clashes.

"We always call on to a peaceful campaign and elections," he said.

Earlier, Fritz assessed the movement was part of democration, especially free speech. However, he reminded that people should remain compliant with the prevailing laws and regulations. He

"According to Law No. 7/2018 on Election, a campaign violation can occur if General Election Commission (KPU) has determined candidates for election including presidential and vice presidential candidates," he said on Monday (August 27).

Currently, KPU has not set any candidate for president and vice president. Therefore, according to him, this issue was not under the authority of Bawaslu.

Fritz said that if things happened were considered to violate the law, such as intimidation and persecution, it could be reported to the police. He asserted officers carry out their duties.

Earlier, National Police has banned declaration of #2019GantiPresiden in Pekabanbaru, Riau and Surabaya, East Java. Police considered the action could disrupt public order.

“National Police states firmly that the notification letter on the action is not accepted and we will disband the event because it can potentially cause disruption to public order and threaten the unity and integrity of the nation,” said National Police's spokesman Setyo Wasisto on Sunday (August 26).
