5.4-magnitude earthquake jolts West Nusa Tenggara

West Nusa Tenggara province was hit by a 7-magnitude earthquake on Sunday.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province on Monday (Aug 6). The epicenter of the quake which struck at 22.50 p.m local time was in the sea some 23 kilometers northwest of Mataram at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

Earlier, 4-magnitude earthquake struck at 21.18 p.m in the sea 16 km northwest of North Lombok at a depth of 11 km. BMKG also said it has detected an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter Scale rocking southern Sumbawa at 19.06 local time.

BMKG spokesman Hary Tirto Djatmiko said here on Monday the southern Sumbawa quake, with an epicenter in the sea at a depth of 10 kilometers. No casualty had been reported as a result of the quake

The quakes hit only a day after a bigger one with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter Scale jolted neighboring island of Lombok leaving at least 98 people killed on the island and eight days after another major quake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale that rocked Lombok, Sumbawa and Bali leaving 16 people dead.
