KPU returns files from ex-corruption prisoners

Around 199 lawmaker candidates identified as former corruption convicts.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — General Election Commission (KPU) has returned files of hundreds of ex-graft prisoners registered as lawmaker candidates. KPU Commissioner Pramono Ubaid Tantowi explained former corruption convicts were running in elections at level Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) in regencies or cities.

Based on Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) findings, there were 199 regional lawmaker candidates identified as former corruption convicts.

“As long as there is no decision from Supreme Court related to the commission regulation (PKPU) No. 20/2018, we will return lawmaker candidates' files to their political parties,” said Pramono on Thursday (July 26).

Pramono said the political parties may replace the lawmaker candidates with others. It was in line with integrity pact agreed by KPU and political parties which would not nominate former corruption convicts to contest in legislative elections.

Earlier, Election Watch Dog (Bawaslu) found 199 lawmaker candidates known as former corruption convicts. The candidates were coming from 11 provinces, 93 regencies, and 12 cities. However, Bawaslu member Mochamad Afifuddin  could not elaborate the names and their political parties.

Based on PKPU No. 5/2018 on the stages, programs and schedule of 2019 General Election, replacement of candidates shall be granted from July 22 and ended on July 31, 2018. Subsequently, on August 1 to August 7, KPU will verify the list and terms of lawmaker candidates.

After being re-verified, KPU drafted and determined a list of temporary lawmaker candidates (DCS) on August 8 to August 12, 2018. After being determined, on August 12 to August 14, KPU will announce DCS at all levels and representation of women from each political parties.

People may access legislative candidates datas. Therefore, public is also may give feedback on the candidates track record on August 12 to August 21.
